Bandersnatch

Bandersnatch

Listen to Bandersnatch MP3 Player
www.bandersnatch.org.uk/mp3player.html

This six piece band has created its own distinctive style within the folk, roots and acoustic genre with a blend of great harmonies and wonderful musical arrangements. The band has the ability to move seamlessly from traditional to contemporary and self-penned material with a repertoire ranging from gentle ballads to driving, rhythmical folk rock, blues and gospel.
Whilst often giving a refreshing edge to established favourites, the band also endeavours to introduce contrasting material from the less frequently explored corners of this particular musical landscape. The warmth and humour that allows them to connect with their audience is not compromised by the discipline that they bring to their performance.

Bandersnatch emerged in early 2000, when six individuals with substantial musical experience decided to create a sound that combines rich vocal harmonies and musicianship. In 2007 the band lineup changed and now comprises:

Dennis Dodds: mandolin, guitar, banjo, & vocals
Ian Kell: acoustic/electric guitar, piano & vocals
Ed McGurk:       guitar, cittern, whistles & vocals
Norman Raw: bass & vocals.
Rebecca Raw: violin/viola & vocals.
Alan Roscoe: guitar & vocals.

Bandersnatch are comfortable playing unplugged in folk clubs or on a large stage. The flexibility resulting from the bands instrumental versatility allows it to adapt its music to the venue and the audience.
Some past and future appearances include theatres, universities, festivals, arts centres, and folk clubs.
Radio Broadcasts: The band has guested and been broadcast on BBC Radio Merseyside, BBC GMR and Chorley fm. Other BBC broadcasts include Radio Lancashire, Radio Shropshire, Radio Derby. Radio Hereford and Worcester, Radio Wales, Sheffield Live, Radio Britfolk, Bradford fm and ONfm.
Recordings: The bands first CD entitled Round and Round was released in 2006 and can be played in full on the bands website. The bands follow-up CD Changing Days recorded at Parkhead Studio was released in November 2008.

Reviews of live performances are often submitted to the bands website. The following are some typical comments:

Gus Glynn and Friends

Gus Glynn and Friends

"Slow burnin' word of mouth kind o' guy"

Originally from Galway, now in the North West of England, songwriter Gus Glynn has what I call 'the soft Irish vocals' yet his music swings along at a speedy tempo, very catchy, very enjoyable, often emotional, absorbing and great entertainment.

From stomping rhythms to sad sweet ballads and atmospheric experimental interludes with deep roots in folk, country, blues, classical and world music, this fine blend of acoustic ingenuity comes alive.

A vast collection of finely crafted original songs intricately woven in strings and percussion with guitar, fiddle, mandolin, slide, triangle, an early kick drum played somewhat like a bodhran, tubular bell to name but a few, and heartfelt vocals with resonant lyrics make live performances something of an emotional rollercoaster getting ever closer to the timeless acoustic bliss that's obviously aimed for here.

A collection of songs called Looking for the light...In the strangest place is now available as some small example of what Gus Glynn and Friends have to offer.
amandalynne 198

Friends are percussionist Iain 'Top Hat' Taylor. Fiddler Terrence Carey and Jozeph Roberts on resonator and mandolin.

Fil Campbell presents Songbirds

RELATED FILES / LINKS

Fil Campbell presents Songbirds
These are the songs that come to every Irish music lovers lips at the pluck of a harp or the sight of a pint of Guinness.

There could be no better songbird than Fil Campbell to lovingly recreate the songs and life stories of our forebears with this live performance. She is joined by Tom McFarland (percussion and vocals) and Brendan Emmett (guitar and mandolin).

Songbirds is the show that second and third generation Irish and their contemporaries will love, take their parents to, indulge their family memories, and reminisce about good old Ireland and the popular ballads of their youth.
But there is much more....the show is about powerful and intelligent women who packed out halls, and helped the Resistance in war torn Europe.

Focusing on the old Irish folk songs that Fil and generations of Irish singers learned as children, Songbirds was developed into a 6 part TV documentary series for RTE Television in Ireland, documenting the lives and music of Delia Murphy and 4 other very influential female singers

Mary O'Hara, Bridie Gallagher, Ruby Murray and Margaret Barry - who all sang similar material in different styles.

Fil narrated the series which is available in its entirety on DVD at live concerts and in it you get snippets of her singing the old songs along with guest performers like Sean Keane and Finbar Fury

Chris Dawsons' Keltiac

Chris Dawsons039 Keltiac
Chris Dawsons' new album "Out on the Edge" with his group KELTIAC has contributions from some of the most well known musicians on the folk/celtic music scene today, including :

Michael McGoldrick (Capercaillie, Lunasa, Afro-Celts, etc),
Dan Ar Braz,
Alain Genty (Barzaz, Gwerz, etc),
Sylvain Barou (Denez Prigent, Comas, etc),

amandalynne 254

Being from the North-West of England, Chris has grown up amongst the fantastic musical diversity in and around Manchester, and is especially interested by the almost lost traditional music of his native region of Lancashire and the North-West in general.

Jigs, Slip jigs, Reels, Hornpipes etc, are well know as being part of Irish music, but they are also native to the North-west of England, with which there has always been a lot of common ground in the folk tradition.

Whilst staying close to his musical roots, he is very much part of a living tradition and keeps an open mind and attitude towards other musical styles.

Chris moved to France in 1998 and went on to form the band KELTIAC which has gone on to play some of the biggest folk/celtic festivals in Europe. The group has now developed into a six piece band with musicians from Brittany, Northern England, Ireland, and France :

Chris Dawson - Flutes/whistles + Bouzouki, Mandolin, Didgeridoo
Kevin Camus - Uilleann pipes, whistles
Frederic Bougouin - Celtic Harps
Nicolas Metois - Bass

Chris is also well known for his flute making talents, with players such as Michael McGoldrick, Brian Finnegan (Flook), Jean-Michel Veillon, Sylvain Barou, etc, all using his world renowned "Rhiannon" bamboo flutes !

amandalynne 254
As you will see on stage, he is also one of the rare flute players who can play the flute using circular breathing, a technique which allows to play indefinitely without a break in the note!!

Chris's previous band in the UK featured Jim Kravietski (bassist on Michael McGoldrick's first solo album 'Morning Rory') and Sylvan Richardson (from Simply red).

Chris is also partner of the record company DBA productions, France.

Instruments played: Traditional Flutes / Whistles, and many instruments including: Mandolin, Bouzouki, Bodhran, Piano / Keyboards, Bass, Didgeridoo....

Frederic Bougouin-Kramer.

Since 1999, Chris has been touring with fantastic traditional harpist Frederic Bougouin-Kramer, who has an essential part on the album and on stage! Fred began his musical studies and apprenticeship of the Celtic harp at the conservatoire de Poitiers. He has worked with Janet Harbison, Katrien Delavier and Myrdhin (Afro-Celts).

During the International Celtic Harp Festival of Dinan in Brittany, Fred was awarded 1st place for improvisation and 2nd place for composition. Branco Stoysin Trio
Born in a university town Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, and entirely self-taught, Branco began playing guitar at the age of 15 and very soon found a love of jazz and Brazilian music, influenced by Joe Pass, Charlie Parker and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Phil Hare

RELATED FILES / LINKS

Phil Hare

Phil Hare is the 'Potato man, the spud u like, the chip on your shoulder,' the cutting-edge lyricist-guitarist-humourist, that audiences love.

He's got it all and is widely regarded as one of the finest and most distinctive acoustic guitarists working on the current folk music circuit.

After serving a 'local apprenticeship' with many well-known names in the North West of England: bands like FULL HOUSE and the FIDDLE BAND, Phil became a solo performer at the end of the 1980's, taking to the road with a powerful, self-written song selection from his self-produced recording 'MAIDENHEAD REVISITED': prompting PAUL ADAMS from FELLSIDE to sign Phil to his record label in 1990.

Following a busy spell at FELLSIDE, during which time Phil was regarded as the 'house guitarist', playing on several FELLSIDE releases, not least, his own critically acclaimed album: 'LIVING ON CREDIT', he teamed up with MIKE JOHNSON from 101 RECORDS. The resulting album: 'COMMON GROUND', received some great reviews and confirmed Phil's position as one of the foremost guitarists and songwriters around.

Phil's 2003 album 'BROKEN TIMING' covered a more reflective and mature approach to song writing, taking in influences from across the acoustic spectrum. Material from this album is available on the MP3 page.

2005 saw the release of 'TEARS FROM THE TRACKS' an eclectic 18-track tour de force featuring traditional and contemporary material with just solo acoustic guitar and voice.

Over the years Phil has been increasingly in demand as a session guitarist. This combined with live performance has seen him work on stage and in the studio with a veritable 'who's who' of traditional and contemporary folk and acoustic musicians.
Artists such as the late JAKE THACKERAY, THE SPINNERS, ISLA ST CLAIR, VIN GARBUTT, CHRIS NEWMAN, TOM MCCONVILLE, DAVE BURLAND, BEN & JOE BROUGHTON, BILL CADDICK, BRAM TAYLOR, GARVA, the acoustic rock band PELE (no, it's not him!) DEAN JOHNSON, JON HARVISON and more recently with dance bands TANGLEFOOT, THREE POINT TURN and PANDEMONIUM. It was with the GINGHAM PINKS dance band that Phil played at EDINBURGH FRINGE 2001 where they provided a musical backdrop for JOHNNY VEGAS and NICHOLAS PARSONS amongst others!

In addition to regular local and national radio play and performance, Phil has completed British and European tours in the last few years, winning many friends with his combination of finely-crafted and often 'socially aware' chorus songs, a rich, husky voice, a humorous line in stage banter, and, quite simply, some of the best guitar playing you are likely to hear anywhere.

Among the many press quotes available on Phil;
IAN WELLS of the DAILY TELEGRAPH wrote: 'If folk song is history from underneath, then Phil's songs are today's broadsides'.
The New York based magazine DIRTY LINEN wrote: 'The songs are British, maybe even Northern English, but this guy is clearly a world class player'.
'Some beautiful guitar playing from the vastly underrated Phil Hare 'LIVING TRADITION'.

"Saltburn Folk Festival Songwriter competition won by a young lady - Wendy Arrowsmith - tremendous song and what a voice and performance .I think we're destined to hear more of her voice and guitar - brilliant singer - a gem."
Pete Betts, M.C. At Saltburn Folk Festival following Wendy's main stage performance of 'The Visitor'.

Wendy has spent the last year performing in the North Yorkshire (& beyond) folk clubs, pubs and festivals both as a booked act and  in more informal sessions. She has a growing reputation as a singer, songwriter & performer.
'The songs I love to sing come from a wide range of sources - some written by me, some are traditional Scottish and Irish ones which I've known since very young and others are American. '.

She says:' My own songs are influenced by the history & people of my 'homes' (North Yorkshire & The West of Scotland), world events and family life'

'Finding time to write songs and play them is a constant challenge with two young children (Kirsty and Peter), a mad labrador, several cats and lots of fish!'

Music has always been part of her life - She first remembers singing in public at a Sunday School Christmas Party aged about 3½. Since then she dabbled in various kinds of music ranging from operetta to Bluegrass, via choral and prog rock.

Solo Reviews:
The lead vocal has a beauty and plaintiveness, which is very rare. The music has a fragile timelessness that soars to the point of excitement.

Flossie Malavialle is a French singer who started getting involved in the British folk scene in 2000-2001 while she was on a teacher exchange in the North East of England.

How it all started...

After 12 years of teaching English full time in secondary schools in the South of France, she decided to apply for a job as a French teacher in England, as she felt it would boost her English to live abroad for a year.
She got one in Stockton-on-Tees and was living in Darlington at the time (great part of the world to improve on your English, like).
She had also been singing for years in France before that and that’s why she found it quite natural to turn up at the Darlington folk club one night to meet the locals and sing a song... She didnt realise then that this was going to be the beginning of a new life in England for her.

And now?

After her exchange was over, she went back to France for a year but she missed the life she had had in England so decided to come back! She is now based in Darlington, does some supply teaching in the area when needed but is mainly focused on her singing.
She has released 10 albums since 2002, Thistledown (September 2002), Mistral (March 2003), Flossie sings Piaf (May 2003) , Making up the miles in December 2004, The Wilderness Years in November 2006, Flossie sings Brel in November 2007, What a wonderful world! (June 2009) with pianist Michael Mulroy, (mainly a collection of jazz standards alongside some very famous modern classics) The Tour Collection (September 2009) which release coincided with the Show of Hands 2009 County Towns Tour, Dark Horses (January 2010) which is a collection of songs written by Keith Donnelly and interpreted by Flossie. Again, this album was released to coincide with the Fairport Convention Wintour for which they did the support in 2010 as their duo "Dark Horses". They also took the album to Australia where they toured extensively in the Spring of 2011.
The latest addition to the collection is called X (as in "10" and not the letter "x") and celebrated the 10 years that Flossie had spent in the UK by 2012... incidentally it's also her 10th album so the title wasn't too hard to find ;-) The album was recorded in August 2012 with Paul Donnelly at the Cluny Studios in Newcastle and features songs by Martyn Joseph, Kate McGarrigle, Carole King, Eva Cassidy, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Randy Newman etc...
It was released at the end of October 2012..

What sort of songs does Flossie sing?

Her repertoire is very open as she likes all sorts of different music genres. Her songs include famous numbers, including Allan Taylor's Roll on the day, Kieran Halpin's Making up the miles, Colum Sands' The child who asks why, Starrett and Laird's  John Condon but also Edith Piaf's eternal favourites No regrets, La vie en rose... or Jacques Brel's Am
sterdam and Ne me quitte pas...
She also loves songs full of energy or, as she calls them herself, full of vavavoum such as Bonnie Raitt's Road's my middle name, Kris Kristofferson's Bobby McGee (Janis Joplin way)... There's also space for lovely ballads such as Georgia on my mind or Frank Sinatra's Strangers in the night as well as jazzy tunes like Let's fall in love, Misty or Fly me to the moon.
So even if you have never seen or heard her before, surely there will be something in her repertoire to suit your taste! Flossie is making new friends wherever she sings and is looking forward to seeing you at any of her concerts soon!

Brooks Williams

Pan-Americana Roots 'n Blues, doused in Moonshine alt-Billy and delicious Dixie (Net Rhythms).

Absolutely beyond criticism! (fRoots)

Ranked one of the Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists, singer-songwriter Brooks Williams writes groove-laden songs and delivers them with an easy-going vocal style and monstrous guitar chops. Walking the line between blues and Americana, Williams has worked stages worldwide for over 25 years, amassing a staggering back-catalogue of songs, recordings and tales. With nearly 20 CDs to his name – and more on the way – this Statesboro Georgia native is, according to americanaUK, impossible not to like.

I have known Brooks for many years. Hes a lovely player, a lovely singer, and a great writer and a lovely man. The real thing (Martin Simpson)

I suggest you get out and buy this album [New Everything] as soon as you can! (R2)

The masterly Brooks now proudly presents his latest solo set [New Everything], a typically classy mix of blues, raggy Americana and healthy new originals, impeccably played and sung as ever. Self-recommending and absolutely beyond criticism! (fRoots)

Reviews

'An absolute delight " she will captivate you " a voice not to be missed " a true minstrel 'Woodies Folk Club, Sussex, UK, September 2006.

Miriam is one of the worlds' best Folk Singers.'The real thing' to quote Nibs van der Spuy. She has a crystal clear, expressive voice, and plays the guitar with great sensitivity, arranging each song according to its theme. Her vibrant, warm personality makes any concert a joy to be part of.

Dave Marks from Hidden Years ArchivesThe Dockyard Theatre February 2007

'Together with a professional approach to audiences, Miriam's haunting voice and tasteful instrumental work never fail to impress'. John Leonard. Smooth Operations. Producer of Radio 2 Mike Harding Show

"If we, citizens, do not support our artists, then we sacrifice our imagination on the altar of crude reality and we end up believing in nothing and having worthless dreams." Yann Martel

A lady of exceptional talent, Her voice is immaculate, impeccable and scintillating.. What a joy to hear every word she sings with perfect diction. 'Mim has a delightful personality that immediately envelopes her audiences, her enchanting voice and easy-going banter captivates every audience whatever age... from toddlers to serene-agers.
We have often used her various talents for product launches... fashion shows... celebration entertainment and social events. One of the few entertainers that make one's heart smile.

A Quick Flashback to the 12th and 19th February 2007 - great words and music evenings"Folk music to be sure... Miriam Erasmus speaks for herself marking times in perfect pitch from 300 years ago to just a few sweet short melodic memories entertaining & stunning .... The amazing Mim Erasmus.Dave Marks of 3rd Ear Music

Mim's roots go back to the UK Folk Scene of the '70s when she was likened to Joan Baez, and ranked alongside Maddy Prior and other revivalists of the time.

Then, she played a significant role in the folk revival, appearing at most of the Folk Clubs and Festivals of the time, including Edinburgh and Cambridge, with acclaim from all the leading critics of the day. Miriam's interpretation of traditional and modern folk songs are unique, and her ability to lead a Folk audience into chorus singing, particularly, 'Keys of Canterbury' at Cambridge Folk Festival 1976, is the stuff of legends.

Over the years in South Africa, she has entertained for many concerts and festivals, including Grahamstown, Port Elizabeth and Splashy Fen  'Over Africa' features on the 10 years CD - and established herself as a shining light in the entertainment business.

She is unique in South Africa, her songs, like 'The beautiful pass at Van Reenen' and 'Over Africa' have become part of their music heritage.
Her 'protest' songs about the border war 'I don't want my child to die' ( Richard Haslop featured this on his 'Roots to Fruits' radio show ) and 'Mother's lament' have been recognised as some of the best, ranking alongside those from other troubled lands like Ireland, USA etc.

These songs, and the music of South Africa, are becoming world renowned now, and Mim is part of this surge. We need to support our artists so that they can show that South Africa has the best unique stories to tell through the art of the Minstrel.

Many of her performances are in the Hidden Years Archive.

She originally retired from the UK Folk Scene in 1977, to have a family, and now they have flown the nest, the family is encouraging her to get back 'out there'.

'Gypsy without a road' [incidentally, now worth over 200 pounds on the original vinyl !!] with a couple of bonus 'live' tracks has been re-released on Saffron Summerfield's  'Mother Earth' label.   saffron@motherearthmusic.co.uk

Now re-established as Miriam Backhouse, Professional Folk Singer, in the UK. Folk Club, Arts Centre and Festival appearances there have been a great success and Miriam's UK 2007 tour was a sell out, and 2011 and 2012 bookings are coming in already.

Since marrying John Erasmus, relocating to South Africa, in 1977, and raising a family, she has diversified into the full range of music, playing 'Anna' in 'The King and I' under the direction of EOH's Steven Stead, amongst countless other musicals, concerts, Radio and T.V. appearances.

For many years, Miriam worked with the late, great Eve Boswell, training young voices and devising concerts for both these students and fellow professionals, notably Durban's first, memorable ' Night of a Hundred Stars '.

With Fiona Tozer, Miriam re-founded the Durban Folk Club in the '80s, and it's still putting on concerts.

Miriam's husband John Erasmus, is an accomplished keyboard and piano player and together 'Mim and John' have toured KZN for the last 20 years, performing
» Rock and Roll 'retro' music and standard ballads.
» Children's puppet shows".Suzy, Granny and Christopher Crocodile are household legends, and 'Splashy' favourites.
» Educational Entertainment in schools.
» Cabaret.
» Fashion shows.
» Music Festivals.
» Charity concerts

Miriam has written hundreds of children's songs, and composed music for 'Movement and Music' in the classroom.

She has researched the power of sound in our lives and written 'The Rainbow Suite' Music for the balancing of the body's 'vibes', together with an accompanying book on the power of colour and sound from the Energy centers.
